Acetylene/Ambient Air Torch
A versatile, traditional silversmithing torch. Orientation required before using by taking
the Intro to Jewelry Class or contacting the steward for approval if you already have
experience

Used to shape, thin and texture metal. Orientation required before using by taking the
Intro to Jewelry Class or contacting the steward for approval if you already have

Bench/Forming Tools
Bench tools include jeweler’s saws and blades, drill bits, files, sandpaper, pliers,
hammers and mallets, bench blocks, bench pins, vise, mandrels, metal shear, oval disc
cutter, dapping set, letter stamps, templates

Soldering Tools
Soldering tools consist of a soldering station with torch, solder, and flux, third hand,
tweezers, picks, soldering blocks, annealing pan, benchtop fume extractor and pickle
pot for cleaning metal after soldering

Finishing Tools
Finishing tools include a rotary tool, polishing wheels, sanding discs, brass brush, and
rotary tumbler with steel shot for polishing, surface refinement, and work hardening of
completed jewelry pieces

Orientation
Intro to Jewelry
An introduction to the Jewelry Lab. Session includes how to use and store the acetylene torch safely. You will also become familiar with the other tools MakerLab has to offer in the jewelry area. Before using the acetylene torch, you must take this class or get approval from the jewelry steward. Required to unlock equipment access.

Orientation
Easy Mixed Metal Earrings
Learn how to design, texture, and create mixed metal earrings! All designs will include either brass or copper combined with silver wire. No soldering will be taught in this beginner-level class.

Standard
Simple Stack Rings
This is a project specific class designed to teach students wire soldering techniques while making beautiful simple stack rings. Taking a prior jewelry class from the Maker Lab is a prerequisite for this class. (i.e. Intro to Jewelry, Easy Mixed Metal Earrings, Silver Concentric Earrings, etc.)

Concentric Circle Earrings
This project specific class is designed to teach students wire soldering techniques while making a beautiful pair of concentric earrings. You may make these earrings out of silver, brass or bronze with a sterling silver ear wire.

Advanced
Handmade Chain Making
Join us for this jewelry open studio session as we explore the art of handmade chain making. Settle into the meditative rhythm of creating chain by hand, from simple non-soldered styles to more complex soldered designs.
We’ll be working in copper and brass to learn techniques you can easily transfer to silver in your own practice. A $5 materials fee (cash or Venmo) covers the use of copper and brass during the class, or you’re welcome to bring your own copper, brass, or silver wire if you prefer. Open to all levels, this session welcomes anyone interested in learning, experimenting, and making. Prereqs required.

Access & Safety
How to access: 1) Take Intro to Jewelry Class to learn how to safely use the acetylene torch and other equipment. If you have experience, contact the steward for orientation. → 2) Review safety guide → 3) Reserve equipment → 4) Clean up & log usage.
PPE/Safety:Eye protection recommended; keep hair/clothing secure; mask required for polishing with flexshaft. Use fume extractor when soldering. Turn off acetylene torch and bleed lines before leaving. Turn off pickle pot.
Materials: Use non-ferrous metals like silver, gold, copper, brass or bronze. Do not use tools on steel unless you consult with steward in advance..
