Oxy/acetylene torch set up and flame coloring

Are you interested in learning how to color metal with heat?  Join Jerica in a hands-on class using the oxy-acetylene torch to color metal.  Class prerequisite is completion of the Intro to Metal Shop Class.

Using an oxy‑acetylene torch to color mild steel introduces students to the controlled application of heat to create rich surface tones ranging from golds and purples to deep blues. This class covers the full workflow: safe cylinder handling, proper regulator adjustment, lighting and adjusting a neutral flame, and understanding how heat gradients produce specific colors on clean steel surfaces. Students learn to read the metal, manage heat movement, and avoid overheating while practicing consistent torch control. The session also emphasizes correct shutdown procedures—extinguishing the flame safely, bleeding the lines,, and securing cylinders—ensuring that every participant develops both artistic sensitivity and disciplined shop habits.
