Class prerequisite: completion of the Intro to Metal Shop class.

Contribute to improving the MakerLab metal shop and gain experience in metal fabrication at the same time.  This first community build project is the fabrication of a rolling workstation to house the belt grinder and bench grinder.  This rolling workstation will eliminate the large wooden table that we currently have, freeing up valuable floor space in the metal shop.

Techniques that will be covering during this build series are mitering square tubing using the horizontal bandsaw, setting up fixtures on the fixturing table, MIG welding, use of the angle grinder and orbital sander to improve weld finish, and drilling and tapping holes in steel.  These classes will be held on an ongoing basis until the project is complete.

Please wear close-toed leather shoes and heavy cotton clothing that provides full upper and lower body coverage.  No synthetic fabrics (polypropylene, rayon, spandex, etc) are allowed in the metal shop at any time.  Clothing should not have free draw chords or frayed edges.  If you have longer hair, bring something to pull your hair back for safety.

Personal protective equipment - if you have personal leather gloves, safety glasses, or hearing protection bring your own.  The MakerLab also has these community items for you to use.  If you have your own welding hood please bring this.  Good close vision is important for effective welding and cutting.  Please bring the appropriate impact resistant glasses or other vision devices as necessary.
