Are you interested in learning more about using scrap steel for “found art” style projects? Join guest instructor, and professional welder, Ben Stauffer as we complete the “K” for the MakerLab sign in the common room in a found art style. We will discuss sources of scrap metal, as well as the types of materials that are safe to use for these purposes and those that should be avoided. Hands-on skills will include cutting with the angle grinder, manual plasma torch, and horizontal bandsaw, as well as MIG welding on materials of various thicknesses. Time allowing, we will demonstrate the creation of templates for the fixturing table.
If you have an interesting piece of steel that you would like to donate to this project for inclusion in the “K” please bring it to the class.
As with all metal shop classes, please wear some form of natural fiber clothing such as wool or heavy cotton with full length upper and lower body coverage. Shoes should be close-toed leather. Clothing should not be excessively baggy. If you have your own personal protective equipment, please bring it to the class. If you have longer hair, please bring something to pull it back for safety.
